Description & Care
Hoya callistophylla ‘Black Cat’ is a highly sought-after and dramatic Hoya variety prized for its thick, elongated leaves with bold, dark veining that contrasts beautifully against the lighter green background. The “Black Cat” form is especially striking for its deeper, more intense veining and overall high-contrast look, giving the foliage an almost graphic, painted appearance.
This plant is grown primarily for its spectacular foliage, though like other Hoyas, it will eventually reward patience with clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers when mature and well established. The leaves are firm, slightly succulent, and hold their shape well, making this a standout specimen even when not in bloom.
Hoya callistophylla ‘Black Cat’ is a relatively slow to moderate grower and prefers bright, indirect light, warm temperatures, and a well-draining, chunky substrate. With proper care, it becomes a stunning, collectible foliage plant that only gets better with age.
Light: Bright, indirect light. Higher light helps maintain strong contrast in the leaf veining, but avoid harsh direct sun.
Water: Allow the substrate to dry mostly between waterings. Prefers a chunky, well-draining mix. Do not let sit in wet soil.
Humidity: Thrives in moderate to higher humidity but adapts well to normal household conditions.
Temperature: 65–85°F. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F.
Growth: Slow to moderate grower with thick, elongated, heavily veined leaves. Blooms on mature growth and reblooms from persistent peduncles.
